Wabi Space

Visual direction and lead VJ for Wabi from 2022 to 2024: open-air nights where the screen was a geodesic dome or a set of stretched fabric sails, played from dusk to mid-morning.

Wabi was a Tunisian community, founded in May 2021 and grown to around 15,000 people, that gathered for open-air nights at locations announced only at the last moment. FMRXR held the visual direction from 2022 to 2024, chapter after chapter. There was no screen. The surface was whatever had been built on the sand that week: a geodesic dome whose triangular facets break any image projected on them, or a canopy of tensioned fabric sails that move in the wind. Both are curved, faceted and never twice the same, so each chapter meant remapping from scratch and writing generative material that survives a surface it does not control. The other constraint was time. These nights ran from six in the evening to ten the next morning, so the visuals had to hold through sunset, full darkness and sunrise, and read correctly under all three. That is sixteen hours of continuous output, not a set. It rules out anything pre-rendered and makes the whole thing a system that has to keep generating and stay legible as the ambient light turns over. Chapters III to VI are documented here. The last, Chapter VI, was held on 8 June 2024.
